Coffee Enema (Gerson Therapy)

Detoxificationpreliminary evidenceHome Possible
Rectal

Coffee enemas are a core component of the Gerson Therapy — used 2–5 times daily in intensive cancer protocols. Organic coffee enemas stimulate the portal vein and the liver's glutathione S-transferase enzyme activity by 700%, dramatically enhancing the liver's capacity to detoxify tumour necrosis products, chemotherapy metabolites, and cancer-generated toxins. Palmitates in coffee cross the gut wall to directly stimulate liver detoxification pathways.

Mechanism of Action

Coffee absorbed rectally reaches the portal vein — the direct liver supply — without first-pass GI metabolism. Kahweol and cafestol palmitates in coffee stimulate glutathione S-transferase (detox enzyme) 600–700% above baseline, the most powerful known dietary stimulus of this enzyme. This enhances Phase II detoxification capacity, clearing heavy metals, carcinogens, and tumour breakdown products during cancer treatment.

Cautions & Contraindications

  • Risk of serious electrolyte imbalance (hypokalaemia) with frequent use — supplement potassium
  • Risk of bowel perforation if performed incorrectly — never use enema if bowel inflamed, obstructed, or post-surgery
  • Infections (colitis, sepsis) reported from contaminated equipment — use sterile, dedicated equipment only
  • Use organic coffee specifically — regular coffee contains pesticides and mycotoxins
  • Do NOT use if undergoing immunosuppressant therapy without medical clearance
  • Several deaths linked to excessive use (>5x daily) in unmonitored settings
