Weight Gain, Swelling & Lymphedema
Some treatments (steroids, hormonal therapy, certain chemotherapy drugs) cause water retention, weight gain, and swelling. Lymphedema occurs when surgery or radiation damages lymph nodes, causing lymph fluid to accumulate, usually in an arm or leg. Both require different but overlapping management strategies.
Herbs & Supplements — Safety Information
Herbal information is for educational purposes. Many herbs interact with chemotherapy and other medications — consult your oncologist before use.
When to Seek Medical Help Immediately
- •Sudden significant swelling in one limb
- •Redness, heat, and pain in a swollen limb (may indicate infection/cellulitis)
- •Shortness of breath with leg swelling (may indicate blood clot)
- •Facial swelling (may indicate superior vena cava syndrome)
3 Natural Remedies
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Best for: Lymphedema after axillary node dissection or inguinal node removal
MLD is a specialised gentle massage technique that stimulates lymph vessel contractions and reroutes lymph fluid around damaged nodes. Performed by a certified lymphedema therapist, it is the gold-standard treatment for lymphedema and is recommended in all major oncology nursing guidelines.
🧪 How to Prepare
See a certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) for professional MLD sessions. They will teach you a self-MLD sequence to perform daily at home. Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) combines MLD with compression bandaging for more advanced cases.
⏰ When to Take
Daily self-MLD (5–15 minutes) morning and evening. Professional sessions as recommended by your CLT.
Compression Garments
Best for: Arm or leg lymphedema, steroid-induced leg swelling
Medical-grade compression sleeves or stockings (20–40 mmHg) prevent lymph fluid from accumulating in at-risk limbs by providing graduated external pressure that supports lymph vessel function. Evidence strongly supports their use for prevention and management of lymphedema.
🧪 How to Prepare
Custom-fitted compression garments from a certified fitter are preferred — off-the-shelf may not provide adequate or appropriate pressure. Wear during waking hours and during exercise. Remove at night unless directed otherwise. Wash daily with mild soap.
⏰ When to Take
Put on in the morning before getting up (fluid accumulates overnight). Remove before sleep.
Low-Sodium Diet
Best for: Steroid-induced swelling, fluid retention from hormonal therapy
Sodium causes water retention. Reducing dietary sodium helps the kidneys excrete excess fluid when swelling is caused by steroid treatment or hormonal therapy. A 1500–2000 mg sodium per day target can meaningfully reduce fluid retention in steroid-treated patients.
🧪 How to Prepare
Avoid processed foods, canned soups, deli meats, salty snacks, and restaurant food (primary sodium sources). Cook with herbs, lemon, garlic, and spices instead of salt. Read labels — target under 600mg sodium per serving. Potassium-rich foods (banana, avocado, sweet potato) help counterbalance sodium.
⏰ When to Take
Consistently, throughout any period of steroid treatment or significant swelling.
