Gynecomastia (Breast Tissue Growth in Men)

Gynecomastia (growth of breast tissue in men) is caused by androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer, some anti-androgen drugs, and occasionally by cancer itself. It causes breast tenderness and cosmetically visible breast tissue. Preventive radiotherapy to breast buds before starting antiandrogens is effective. Tamoxifen is used medically. Natural approaches mainly address discomfort.

Herbs & Supplements — Safety Information

Herbal information is for educational purposes. Many herbs interact with chemotherapy and other medications — consult your oncologist before use.

When to Seek Medical Help Immediately

  • New breast lump in any person — cancer must be ruled out
  • Discharge from the nipple
  • Increasing pain or tenderness not responding to conservative measures

2 Natural Remedies

Prophylactic Breast Bud Radiotherapy

Best for: Prevention of antiandrogen-induced gynecomastia in prostate cancer patients

Strong Evidence

A single dose of radiotherapy to the breast tissue before starting anti-androgen therapy (bicalutamide, flutamide) prevents gynecomastia development in 70–80% of patients. This is a standard oncological intervention, not truly a 'home remedy', but many patients are not offered it and should ask. It must be done BEFORE treatment starts.

🧪 How to Prepare

Discuss with your urologist/oncologist before starting antiandrogen therapy: 'Should I have preventive breast radiotherapy?' A single 12–15 Gy dose to each breast bud takes 30 minutes.

⏰ When to Take

Before starting antiandrogen therapy.

🩱

Supportive Compression Garments

Best for: Symptom management of established gynecomastia during ADT

Traditional Use

When gynecomastia is established, a supportive compression garment (athletic compression vest or specialised gynecomastia compression shirt) reduces discomfort during movement, minimises appearance-related distress, and reduces nipple friction and tenderness.

🧪 How to Prepare

Medical compression vests or athletic compression shirts in appropriate sizing. Wear daily under clothing. Ensure fit is firm but not restrictive of breathing.

⏰ When to Take

Throughout any period of breast tenderness or significant tissue growth.
