Metabolic Therapy / Gonzalez Protocol

Origin: Based on Beard's enzyme therapy (1906) and developed by Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez in the 1980s–2000s, USA

The Gonzalez Protocol is an intensive individualised treatment based on Dr. William Donald Kelley's programme, itself derived from embryologist John Beard's 1906 theory that pancreatic enzymes are the body's primary defence against cancer. Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, a New York oncologist, spent decades treating patients with advanced cancers using three components: individualised diet (specific to body type, ranging from strict vegetarian to high-meat), megadose pancreatic enzyme supplements, and an extensive programme of nutritional supplements and detoxification (coffee enemas).

preliminary evidence

Key Components

  • Megadose pancreatic enzymes (up to 150+ capsules/day in severe cases)
  • Highly individualised diet based on metabolic typing (10 distinct diet types)
  • Coffee enemas 2x daily for liver detoxification
  • 100–175 nutritional supplement capsules per day
  • Specific supplement schedule timed throughout the day
  • Periodic fasting and 'purges' for detoxification
  • Stress reduction and psychological support

How It Works

The Gonzalez Protocol is based on Beard's trophoblast theory: cancer cells share properties with embryonic trophoblast cells, and pancreatic enzymes (particularly chymotrypsin and trypsin) can digest and destroy the protein coating around cancer cells, exposing them to immune attack. The individualised diet seeks to restore the specific metabolic balance each patient's body type requires. Coffee enemas force the liver to release bile and expel accumulated toxins from the dying cancer cells.

Evidence Summary

Dr. Gonzalez published a retrospective case series showing improved survival in pancreatic cancer patients compared to historical controls. This led to an NCI-funded randomised trial (published 2010) comparing the Gonzalez Protocol to gemcitabine chemotherapy in pancreatic cancer. The trial showed chemotherapy was significantly superior (median survival 14 months vs 4.3 months). The protocol's proponents questioned the trial design. For other cancer types, only case reports exist. The protocol requires considerable dedication and cost.

Cautions & Safety

  • Extremely time-consuming (several hours daily for supplements and enemas)
  • Very expensive — supplements can cost $10,000–$20,000 per year
  • The randomised trial showed inferior outcomes vs chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer
  • Coffee enemas risk infection and electrolyte disturbance
  • Megadose enzymes can cause nausea and digestive upset
  • Requires working with a trained Gonzalez Protocol practitioner
