Thyme / Wild Thyme
Thymus vulgaris / Thymus serpyllum
Thyme is one of the Mediterranean basin's most ancient medicinal plants, used by ancient Egyptians for embalming, ancient Greeks for courage, and modern phytotherapy for anti-cancer effects. Thymol and carvacrol (the main phenolic compounds) induce apoptosis and inhibit proliferation in breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer cells through NF-κB inhibition, mitochondrial membrane disruption, and reactive oxygen species generation in cancer cells. Rosmarinic acid — shared with rosemary — adds further anti-angiogenic effects. Thymoquinone (though most associated with Nigella sativa) is also present in some Thymus species. A key cancer-supportive use is thyme's potent activity against biofilm-forming bacteria including H. pylori — major driver of gastric cancer. German Commission E approves thyme for upper respiratory conditions, and European phytotherapy widely uses it as a primary anti-infective and anti-proliferative herb.
